Installation of cylinder liners

KS | Kolbenschmidt | Motorservice

How are wet cylinder liners installed properly? What needs to be checked before installing cylinder liners? How do you check whether the liner flange seating surface is level? Can you attach O-rings directly to the cylinder liner? You can find the answers in this article.

Engine block preliminary checks

1:00 – 2:45

Optical inspection of the engine block: if there is damage or corrosion, reworking may be required. You must also inspect whether the engine block is warped and check that the liner flange seating surface is clean and level. Another very important check: inspect the O-ring grooves in the engine block.

Check the cylinder liner

2:45 – 3:40

The cylinder liner is pressed into the engine block with screws and sleeves. Then the liner protrusion is measured at four points (every 90 degrees) using a dial gauge and compared with the manufacturer's specifications.
Attention: if the amount of protrusion is insufficient, it must not be compensated using multiple tombak rings or washers. In such cases, you should use oversized liners that have a higher liner flange. Before removing the liner, mark its exact position in the engine block with a pen.

Inserting the O-rings

3:40 – 4:30

Insert the O-rings in the order depicted on the packaging. Attention: do not use liquid sealants under any circumstances. Now apply the installation paste onto the O-rings. Spread the rest evenly over the contact areas of the cylinder liners.

4:30 – 5:10

Insert the cylinder liner into the engine block with a smooth motion. Make sure that the markings on the engine block and cylinder liner align. As a final inspection, check the inside diameter using a bore gauge in the area of the O-rings.
