Information on the product

The air dryer provides a special kind of filtration. It is used, above all, in the compressed air supply system of medium and heavy utility vehicles. Because compressed air is used to provide the energy for numerous control and regulating processes in modern vehicles, the air dryer for brake systems is classed as a safety component on the vehicle.

In modern HGVs, the compressed air system plays a central role in the functioning of the braking system and other pneumatic systems. The compressed air required for braking is generated by an engine-driven compressor (air compressor) and distributed over several circuits. It then flows to the single-chamber air dryer with integrated pressure regulator. There, moisture is removed from the air by specially developed granulate or a drying agent to prevent corrosion and damage caused by condensation and steam. The air dryer cartridge must be replaced regularly to ensure optimum performance. At the same time, the pressure regulator limits the pressure in the brake system to a defined value. The dried compressed air is then fed into a compressed air tank, which is equipped with a condensate sensor and a safety or protective valve. This monitors air drying and ensures operational safety.

To prevent leaks and defects that could affect the parking brake or the spring accumulator, a correctly set shut-off pressure and functioning drain valves are essential. The operating pressure must be kept constant, as too high or too low a pressure can lead to malfunctions. In the event of a failure, a suitable spare part is required quickly to ensure the safety of the vehicle.

If water and oil enter the reservoirs and thus the brake system, the consequences will be dangerous and costly damage: The moisture can damage the valves and cause corrosion damage to the lines and receptacles. In addition, the entire system may freeze at sub-zero temperatures. The oil impairs the functioning of the valves and causes the brake response to deteriorate. This causes an increased load on the brake pads and they wear faster.

In order to prevent this potential damage and costs, the use of a Kolbenschmidt air dryer for brake systems is highly recommended. The durability of the individual components is improved, and the vehicle downtime is reduced.
